Create Belonging through Diversity and Inclusion

“Diversity is the mix. Inclusion is making the mix work.”

It’s odd. In some ways, working from home has created unexpected opportunities for people around the country to work together. You would think being in the office would allow for that, but I suppose when you are on your own at home, you are more likely to reach out to others in your position in different regions for ideas and advice. There aren’t many female managers in my region, and it has been very helpful to meet women in management who work in other regions. I never thought much about the lack of women in my own office before. It is something I have become accustomed to. It has been gratifying to meet my peers—and particularly my female peers.

It’s not that I have been treated differently because I’m a woman. Our culture is not a good old boys club. But having a sense of belonging with other women managers has been a positive experience, and it is one I don’t think I would have had if we hadn’t start working remotely.

The cohesiveness we have created has improved so many of our processes. It also has increased the visibility of my team. My team is diverse, in part I think because as a woman of color, I have consciously tried to create that. I think sometimes they have felt . . . well, not excluded exactly, but that career advancement was going to be challenging. They do not see a lot of female leaders or people of color in leadership, at least in our region. We have been talking about starting some virtual diversity groups so we can connect with and even create different peer groups, and I am confident they will help build the confidence we all need to advance. I’m excited to be doing this across the country—no borders, so to speak. It will open doors for everyone.
